62.父子与驴的故事 (The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey) iconsound

yǒu yī cì ， fù zǐ liǎ qiān zhe lǘ qù jí shì 。

有一次，父子俩牵着驴去集市。
A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market.

tā men zǒu zài lù shàng shí ， yī gè xiāng xià rén jīng guò tā men shēn biān shí shuō ：

他们走在路上时，一个乡下人经过他们身边时说：
As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said:

“ nǐ men zhēn shì bèn dàn ， wèi shén me bù qí zài lǘ shàng ne ？ ” 。

“你们真是笨蛋，为什么不骑在驴上呢？”。
"You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

yú shì zhè gè rén jiù bǎ ér zǐ fàng zài lǘ bèi shàng jì xù zǒu 。

于是这个人就把儿子放在驴背上继续走。
So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way.  

hěn kuài de tā men lù guò yī qún rén ， qí zhōng yǒu yī gè rén shuō ：

很快的他们路过一群人，其中有一个人说：
But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said:

“ kàn zhè gè lǎn duò de nián qīng rén ， tā zì jǐ qí lǘ què ràng bà bà zǒu lù ” 。

“看这个懒惰的年轻人，他自己骑驴却让爸爸走路”。
"See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

yú shì bà bà bǎ ér zǐ jiào xià lái ， zì jǐ qí le shàng qù 。 

于是爸爸把儿子叫下来，自己骑了上去。
So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself.

dàn shì tā men méi yǒu zǒu duō yuǎn ， jiù pèng dào liǎng gè nǚ rén ，   

但是他们没有走多远，就碰到两个女人， 
But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women,

yī gè nǚ rén duì lìng yī gè nǚ rén shuō ： “ zhè gè lǎn duò de bà bà zhēn bù xiū chǐ ，

一个女人对另一个女人说：“这个懒惰的爸爸真不羞耻，
one of whom said to the other: "Shame on that lazy lout 

jìng rán ràng tā kě lián de xiǎo ér zǐ gēn zài lǘ pì gǔ hòu miàn pǎo” 。

竟然让他可怜的小儿子跟在驴屁股后面跑”。
to let his poor little son trudge along."

tīng dào zhè huà ， zhè gè rén kāi shǐ bù zhī dào zěn me zuò cái hǎo ，
听到这话，这个人开始不知道怎么做才好，
Well, the Man didn't know what to do,

zuì hòu tā bǎ ér zǐ bào qǐ lái fàng zài zì jǐ qián miàn yī qǐ qí zài lǘ shàng 。

最后他把儿子抱起来放在自己前面一起骑在驴上。
but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey.  

zhè shí tā men zǒu dào le yī gè zhèn zǐ ，

这时他们走到了一个镇子，
By this time they had come to the town,

xǔ duō guò lù rén kāi shǐ zhǐ zhǐ diǎn diǎn qiè qiè sī yǔ 。

许多过路人开始指指点点窃窃私语。
and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them.  

zhè gè bà bà jiù tíng xià lái ， wèn tā men zài shuō shén me 。 

这个爸爸就停下来，问他们在说什么。
The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at.  The men said:

rén men jiù wèn tā ： “ nán dào nǐ bù jué dé xiū chǐ mɑ ？

人们就问他：“难道你不觉得羞耻吗？
"Aren't you ashamed of 

nǐ men fù zǐ liǎ dōu qí zài lǘ bèi shàng ， bǎ kě lián de lǘ kuài yā de zǒu bù dòng le 。”

你们父子俩都骑在驴背上，把可怜的驴快压的走不动了。”
yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours and your hulking son?"

jiē guǒ fù zǐ liǎ cóng lǘ bèi shàng xià lái ， sī liàng dào dǐ yīng gāi zěn me zuò 。

结果父子俩从驴背上下来，思量到底应该怎么做。
The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do.  

tā men xiǎng le yòu xiǎng ， zuì hòu jué dìng kǎn yī gēn mù gùn ，

他们想了又想，最后决定砍一根木棍，
They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole,

bǎ lǘ de jiǎo bǎng zài shàng miàn ， fù zǐ liǎ qián hòu tái zhe tā zǒu 。

把驴的脚绑在上面，父子俩前后抬着它走。
Tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders.

lù guò de rén kàn dào zhè gè qíng jǐng dōu chǐ xiào tā men 。

路过的人看到这个情景都耻笑他们。
They went along amid the laughter of all 

dāng tā men zǒu dào shì chǎng de qiáo shàng shí ， lǘ hòu tuǐ de shéng zǐ sōng le ，

当他们走到市场的桥上时，驴后腿的绳子松了，
who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose,

tā bù tíng de tí chuài ， ér zǐ káng de nà biān bù dé bù fàng shǒu 。

它不停的蹄踹，儿子扛的那边不得不放手。
kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole.  

zài zhēng zhá guò chéng zhōng ， lǘ fān luò dào qiáo xià ，

在挣扎过程中，驴翻落到桥下，
In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge,

dàn yīn wéi tā de qián tí bèi bǎng zài yī qǐ ， jié guǒ jiù bèi yān sǐ le 。 
但因为它的前蹄被绑在一起，结果就被淹死了。
and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.

yī gè gēn zhe tā men de lǎo rén shuō ：“ nǐ men jīn tiān xué le yī gè gōng kè ， 

一个跟着他们的老人说：“你们今天学了一个功课， 
"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them:

bù yào qī wàng néng tǎo hǎo suǒ yǒu rén ，dào tóu lái què shuí yě tǎo hǎo bù le ” 。

不要期望能讨好所有人，到头来却谁也讨好不了”。
"Please all, and you will please none."

62.The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey (父子与驴的故事) iconsound

A Man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market.

yǒu yī cì ， fù zǐ liǎ qiān zhe lǘ qù jí shì 。
有一次，父子俩牵着驴去集市。

As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said:

tā men zǒu zài lù shàng shí ， yī gè xiāng xià rén jīng guò tā men shēn biān shí shuō ：
他们走在路上时，一个乡下人经过他们身边时说：

"You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?"

“ nǐ men zhēn shì bèn dàn ， wèi shén me bù qí zài lǘ shàng ne ？ ” 。
“你们真是笨蛋，为什么不骑在驴上呢？”。

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way.  

yú shì zhè gè rén jiù bǎ ér zǐ fàng zài lǘ bèi shàng jì xù zǒu 。
于是这个人就把儿子放在驴背上继续走。

But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said:

hěn kuài de tā men lù guò yī qún rén ， qí zhōng yǒu yī gè rén shuō ：
很快的他们路过一群人，其中有一个人说：

"See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."

“ kàn zhè gè lǎn duò de nián qīng rén ， tā zì jǐ qí lǘ què ràng bà bà zǒu lù ” 。

yú shì bà bà bǎ ér zǐ jiào xià lái ， zì jǐ qí le shàng qù 。 
于是爸爸把儿子叫下来，自己骑了上去。

But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women,

dàn shì tā men méi yǒu zǒu duō yuǎn ， jiù pèng dào liǎng gè nǚ rén ，   
但是他们没有走多远，就碰到两个女人， 
one of whom said to the other: "Shame on that lazy lout 

yī gè nǚ rén duì lìng yī gè nǚ rén shuō ： “ zhè gè lǎn duò de bà bà zhēn bù xiū chǐ ，
一个女人对另一个女人说：“这个懒惰的爸爸真不羞耻，

to let his poor little son trudge along."

jìng rán ràng tā kě lián de xiǎo ér zǐ gēn zài lǘ pì gǔ hòu miàn pǎo” 。
竟然让他可怜的小儿子跟在驴屁股后面跑”。

Well, the Man didn't know what to do,

tīng dào zhè huà ， zhè gè rén kāi shǐ bù zhī dào zěn me zuò cái hǎo ，
听到这话，这个人开始不知道怎么做才好，

but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey.  

zuì hòu tā bǎ ér zǐ bào qǐ lái fàng zài zì jǐ qián miàn yī qǐ qí zài lǘ shàng 。
最后他把儿子抱起来放在自己前面一起骑在驴上。

By this time they had come to the town,

zhè shí tā men zǒu dào le yī gè zhèn zǐ ，
这时他们走到了一个镇子，

and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them.  

xǔ duō guò lù rén kāi shǐ zhǐ zhǐ diǎn diǎn qiè qiè sī yǔ 。
许多过路人开始指指点点窃窃私语。

The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at.  The men said:

zhè gè bà bà jiù tíng xià lái ， wèn tā men zài shuō shén me 。 
这个爸爸就停下来，问他们在说什么。

"Aren't you ashamed of 

rén men jiù wèn tā ： “ nán dào nǐ bù jué dé xiū chǐ mɑ ？
人们就问他：“难道你不觉得羞耻吗？

yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours and your hulking son?"

nǐ men fù zǐ liǎ dōu qí zài lǘ bèi shàng ， bǎ kě lián de lǘ kuài yā de zǒu bù dòng le 。”

The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do.  

jiē guǒ fù zǐ liǎ cóng lǘ bèi shàng xià lái ， sī liàng dào dǐ yīng gāi zěn me zuò 。
结果父子俩从驴背上下来，思量到底应该怎么做。

They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole,

tā men xiǎng le yòu xiǎng ， zuì hòu jué dìng kǎn yī gēn mù gùn ，
他们想了又想，最后决定砍一根木棍，

Tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders.

bǎ lǘ de jiǎo bǎng zài shàng miàn ， fù zǐ liǎ qián hòu tái zhe tā zǒu 。

lù guò de rén kàn dào zhè gè qíng jǐng dōu chǐ xiào tā men 。

who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose,

dāng tā men zǒu dào shì chǎng de qiáo shàng shí ， lǘ hòu tuǐ de shéng zǐ sōng le ，
当他们走到市场的桥上时，驴后腿的绳子松了，

kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole.  

tā bù tíng de tí chuài ， ér zǐ káng de nà biān bù dé bù fàng shǒu 。
它不停的蹄踹，儿子扛的那边不得不放手。

In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge,

zài zhēng zhá guò chéng zhōng ， lǘ fān luò dào qiáo xià ，
在挣扎过程中，驴翻落到桥下，

and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.

dàn yīn wéi tā de qián tí bèi bǎng zài yī qǐ ， jié guǒ jiù bèi yān sǐ le 。

bù yào qī wàng néng tǎo hǎo suǒ yǒu rén ，dào tóu lái què shuí yě tǎo hǎo bù le ” 。
