37.树和芦苇 (The Tree and the Reed) iconsound

dà shù duì zhǎng zài tā jiǎo gēn ér de lú wěi shuō :“ xiǎo jiā huǒ ér , 

大树对长在它脚跟儿的芦苇说:“小家伙儿, 

"Well, little one," said a Tree to a Reed that was growing at its foot,

wéi shén me nǐ bù bǎ gēn wǎng dì lǐ zhā shēn yī diǎn ?

为什么你不把根往地里扎深一点?

"why do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground,

nà me nǐ jiù kě yǐ xiàng wǒ yī yàng zài kōng zhōng zì háo de shēn chū tóu lái ” 。

那么你就可以像我一样在空中自豪的伸出头来”。

and raise your head boldly in the air as I do?"

lú wěi shuō : “ wǒ hěn mǎn yì xiàn zài de qíng kuàng ,

芦苇说:“我很满意现在的情况,

"I am contented with my lot," said the Reed.  

suī rán wǒ kàn qǐ lái bù xíong wěi , dàn wǒ gǎn jué hěn ān quán ” 。

虽然我看起来不雄伟,但我感觉很安全”。

"I may not be so grand, but I think I am safer."

shù cháo xiào dào :” ān quán , shuí kě yǐ bǎ wǒ lián gēn bá qǐ lái ?shuí yòu néng bǎ wǒ de tóu èn zài dì shàng  ne ? “ .

树嘲笑道:“安全,谁可以把我连根拔起来?谁又能把我的头摁在地上呢?”。

"Safe!" sneered the Tree.  "Who shall pluck me up by the roots or bow my head to the ground?"  

dàn shì , shù hěn kuài jiù hòu huǐ shuō le dà huà 。

但是,树很快就后悔说了大话。

But it soon had to repent of its boasting,

yīn wéi yī cháng jù fēng bǎ tā cóng dì lǐ bá qǐ rēng zài dì shàng chéng le yī kuài fèi mù 。

因为一场飓风把它从地里拔起扔在地上成了一块废木。

for a hurricane arose which tore it up from its roots, and cast it a useless log on the ground, while the little Reed,

ér lú wěi zhǐ bèi fēng chuī wān le yāo , fēng bào yī guò ,tā yòu chóng xīn zhí lì qǐ lái 。

而芦苇只被风吹弯了腰,风暴一过,它又重新直立起来。

bending to the force of the wind, soon stood upright again when the storm had passed over.

gù shì shì shuō : bù xiǎn yǎn de dōng xī zuì ān quán 。

故事是说:不显眼的东西最安全。

Obscurity often brings safety.

"Well, little one," said a Tree to a Reed that was growing at its foot,

dà shù duì zhǎng zài tā jiǎo gēn ér de lú wěi shuō :“ xiǎo jiā huǒ ér , 

大树对长在它脚跟儿的芦苇说:“小家伙儿, 

"why do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground,

wéi shén me nǐ bù bǎ gēn wǎng dì lǐ zhā shēn yī diǎn ?

为什么你不把根往地里扎深一点?

and raise your head boldly in the air as I do?"

nà me nǐ jiù kě yǐ xiàng wǒ yī yàng zài kōng zhōng zì háo de shēn chū tóu lái ” 。

那么你就可以像我一样在空中自豪的伸出头来”。

lú wěi shuō : “ wǒ hěn mǎn yì xiàn zài de qíng kuàng ,
